STOP THE BLEED Course Dates 2023

STOP THE BLEED® is an initiative of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Hartford Consensus; it represents the current best practice recommendations to control severe bleeding. It provides bystanders skills and basic tools to assess and stop uncontrolled bleeding in an emergency and can save lives.

STOP THE BLEED® is a grassroots effort that encourages bystanders to become trained equipped and empowered to first respond during emergencies, before professional help can arrive, and address the injuries no matter the situation or cause of severe bleeding.

This course uses Power Point lecture, video, and instructor demonstration of equipment application. It is interactive which allows the learner hands on experience with equipment and skill application, with instructor oversight. This training will focus on in depth explanations, assessment and hands on application of various bleeding control methods.

Bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death after injury. The Hartford Consensus along with ACS emphasizes no one should die from uncontrolled bleeding.  Death from bleeding can occur in minutes, and many mechanisms of Injury can cause severe bleeding. Skills and techniques in the course apply to severe external bleeding regardless of the cause. ACS and Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre are committed to 0 preventable deaths.

Coaching for Development Assignment Testing

Shared on behalf of Human Resources

Thank you for your patience as we have been working with the vendor to resolve some technical challenges related to the much anticipated Coaching For Development (CFD) program. As you may recall, CFD is a performance conversation that is employee driven, but jointly owned through meaningful and interactive conversations with management. There have been several technical issues which have extended the launch of CFD.

In order to ensure a successful launch of the program, we will be testing live in Dual Code, our learning management system, prior to the launch of the 2023/24 learning year. While precautions will be put into place to prevent unnecessary notifications or emails, there is the potential for the system to send out automated emails informing staff of overdue or pending CFD forms. If received, these emails should be disregarded. There is currently a banner on our Dual Code LMS, also notifying users of the possibility of early CFD assignment.

Upon completion of testing, training sessions for the CFD will be rescheduled, and any dates or deadlines, when set, will be communicated in advance to Managers and staff.
For more information or questions about this project, please reach out to Madeline Reinikka at madeline.reinikka@tbh.net or extension 6221.

First ‘Blood on Board’ program for Northern Ontario to launch in spring

(via Ornge Media Relations)

Ornge, Ontario’s provider of air ambulance and critical care transport services, and Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) are pleased to announce northern Ontario’s first ‘Blood on Board’ program. Ornge paramedics will have blood on the aircraft, allowing crews to launch without delay bringing blood products with them to communities across the north by air and shortening time to administration to  patients in need.

“We are pleased to work with our partners in bringing this life-saving therapy to the region,” says Dr. Homer Tien, President and CEO of Ornge. “This program will ensure trauma patients receive blood products quickly at a time when every minute counts, greatly enhancing pre-hospital capabilities within rural and remote communities.”

The collaboration between Ornge and TBRHSC is scheduled to launch in April 2023. The blood bank at TBRHSC will supply Ornge with blood products in specialized coolers designed for the storage and transport of blood. Blood temperatures are monitored carefully during storage and on board the aircraft up to the time of transfusion, ensuring the highest safety standards are met.

“We are committed to working with our regional partners in innovative ways, to ensure the people of Northwestern Ontario receive the best care possible, as soon as possible,” says Dr. Rhonda Crocker Ellacott, President and CEO of TBRHSC and CEO of Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute. “Having ‘Blood on Board’ available to provide a transfusion to patients in emergency situations can mean the difference between life and death.”

Ontario’s first Blood on Board program – a partnership between Ornge and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto – launched in 2021. More than 80 units of blood have been administered to over 50 patients since the launch of the program.

Hemorrhage is a leading cause of death in traumatically injured patients.  Research shows that early blood transfusion can improve patient outcomes. Timely access to blood transfusion is particularly important for patients who face long transport times to definitive care.

“We have lost too many NAN community members to preventable deaths as a result of inequitable health services in the remote North, but acknowledge that medevacs are a lifeline for many of our underserviced communities,” says Deputy Chief Victor Linklater, Nishnawbe Aski Nation. “We welcome the long-awaited ability to finally have ‘Blood on Board’ on these aircraft, and know that this critical enhancement to service will undoubtedly save lives. Miigwetch to Ornge, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, and everyone involved for ensuring that this life-saving initiative is available to NAN communities.”

This program is one of a number of initiatives aimed at improving health equity in Northern Ontario communities. In April 2022, Ornge launched a one-year trial of a specialized transport team to perform mental health-related transports across the north. In December, the Government of Ontario announced the renewal of Ornge’s northern-based fixed wing aircraft fleet, involving the replacement of eight aircraft as they reach the conclusion of their operational life.

About Ornge
Ornge, a not-for-profit organization, co-ordinates all aspects of Ontario’s air ambulance system, the critical care land transport program and the authorisation of air and land ambulance transfers between hospitals.

IT/IS Team Gives Back

Since the pandemic hit, most of the Information Technology and Information Systems team have been working from home.

Each year for the holidays, they have had a WebEx gathering where they play various games as a way to get the team together.

This year, they decided to have a 50/50 draw. There was a total of $1,120 raised for the 50/50, and the winnings were split between the Hospital’s Patient Clothing Cupboard and St. Joseph’s Care Group’s Secret Santa.

This donation will help volunteers purchase clothing for patients in situations when the patient or family is unable to provide the necessary clothing upon discharge.

Staff access the Patient Clothing Cupboard everyday for patients, so our need is great. Your generosity is greatly appreciated in helping us serve patients.

Again, thank you so much to the IT/IS team for your donation to support patients!
