Coming Home With Gold

Samantha Morris, Health Promotion Project Assistant in Prevention and Screening Clinical Services, won the gold medal at the Canadian Curling Club Championship last week in Ottawa, Ontario.

Team Larocque, consisting of Samantha (third), Tracey Larocque (skip), Corie Adamson (second), and Rebecca Carr (lead) qualified for the weeklong national event in Ottawa after winning the Provincial playdowns in Sault Ste. Marie in November.

Representing team Northern Ontario at the national competition, they finished their round robin with a record of five wins and one loss. Losing their first playoff game to Nova Scotia, the ladies battled back to win their next four in a row. In total, they played 11 games, winning their final game against team Ontario on Saturday with a score of 7 to 5, scoring their final two points in an extra end, to secure the gold medal.

Congratulations to Samantha and Team Larocque!

International Volunteer Day (December 5th)

December 5th is recognized as International Volunteer Day, a global celebration that recognizes the contributions and positive impacts of volunteers in all areas of society. Each year, International Volunteer Day is an opportunity for all of us to raise awareness of the work of volunteers, encourage governments to support volunteer efforts, and recognize volunteer contributions at local, national and international levels.

Volunteers play an integral role at our Hospital. They lend their time and skills to support clients and improve lives across the organization. We would like to take this opportunity to offer a heartfelt “Thank You” to our dedicated volunteers. Although the pandemic created great changes to our volunteer programs, we applaud those who found alternate ways to stay in touch during the height of the pandemic. Needless to say, we were thrilled when we were able to welcome volunteers back to service so that they could continue their important work. Our volunteer programs could not be a reality without the ongoing support of staff and managers – thank you for enabling our volunteers to make a difference in providing Patient and Family Centred Care at our Hospital.

Health Sciences Foundation thanks generous donors on Thank You Thursday

Vanessa Mihaljevic, Registered Nurse, Labour & Delivery, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

The community’s generosity on Giving Tuesday helped raise $58,484 which will purchase two Panda Infant Warmers and a delivery cart for the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre’s NICU and Labour & Delivery ward.  The Foundation’s $48,000 goal to purchase two Panda Infant Warmers was surpassed around 6:00 pm, and a new “stretch goal” of an additional $10,000 to purchase a delivery cart for the Labour & Delivery ward was introduced.  With the funds raised, all three pieces of equipment are on their way to the Hospital.

“We cannot thank the community enough on Thank You Thursday,” says Glenn Craig, President & CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation. “The day is all about Philanthropy, and once again our community rallied together and in turn we are able to purchase some great equipment for the Labour & Delivery ward.  We exceeded our fund raising goal, and with the additional money raised we were able to purchase additional equipment. This would not have been made possible without our matching gift partners, who generously matched donations dollar for dollar.”

This year’s matching gift partners included:

  • Dr. Rhonda Crocker Ellacott, President & CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre and CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute, $10,000
  • Rainbow Printers, $5,000
  • Gary & Leslie Savitsky, $5,000
  • Alex & Vince Mirabelli, RE/MAX First Choice Realty, $1,000

Dr. Rhonda Crocker Ellacott expressed so much gratitude towards both donors and Hospital staff for their generosity shown on this day of giving. “Giving Tuesday is such a great initiative and I cannot thank the donors and health care workers enough.  The equipment being purchased will not only help our patients, but will also help our staff to provide the best possible care they can.  Each donation, no matter how big or small, has helped provide better health care at our Hospital.”

Kasey Etreni’s Retirement

Shared on behalf of David McConnell, Manager, Radiation Therapy and Surgical Oncology

Please join me in congratulating Kasey Etreni on her retirement from the Radiation Therapy Department in the Cancer Program, effective January 30, 2022.

After graduating from Princess Margaret School of Radiation Therapy in 1986, Kasey began working for the Northwestern Ontario Regional Cancer Care, Cancer Centre at the Port Arthur General Hospital. Throughout the late 1990’s and 2000’s Kasey was highly involved with the various professional associations including the OAMRT and the CAMRT. Kasey supported advancing professional development activities and the transformation in Radiation Therapy education to a degree based program.

Kasey was highly dedicated not only to her profession as a Radiation Therapist but also to improvements and advancements in patient care. Kasey spent time conducting research and brining clinical trials opportunities to our program and she also led the breast cancer disease site working group and supported the advancement of our breast treatment techniques locally.

Since 2011, Kasey has been the Charge Radiation Therapist for the department, providing leadership and guidance. She has supported the day to day operations of the clinic and liaising with other departments.

Outside of the work setting, Kasey is an active member of the community, volunteering for the Thunder Bay Woman’s Hockey Association and with Camp Quality Northwestern Ontario for many years.

It has been a pleasure to work with Kasey over the years. Her dedication to the program and our patients has been tremendous, her passion and tenacity will be missed.
