Personal Support Worker Day (May 19)

May 19th is Personal Support Worker Day. It’s an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the vital contributions of Personal Support Workers (PSWs) to Ontario’s most vulnerable residents.

In Ontario, PSWs provide care to any person who requires personal assistance with activities of daily living. The PSWs who work at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre look after a broad range of supportive activities across many areas of the Hospital, including assisting with activities of daily living such as personal hygiene, mobility, getting dressed, assisting patients with meal selection, the delivery of nourishments, and assisting with feeding as needed. Please join us in thanking our PSWs for everything that they do.

Passing of Kelly Daberer

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our friend and colleague, Kelly Daberer on May 8, 2024.

TBRHSC sadly lost a valued member of the phlebotomy team in the laboratory. Kelly Daberer has been a vital part of this team since 2006. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting Kelly, her smile was radiant, her laugh was contagious and her compassion endless. Kelly would go out of her way to help others with her kind heart and always found time for her family, friends and colleagues. Kelly’s legacy will continue to inspire us and remind us of the wonderful person she was.  She will be missed, but her spirit will continue to live in our hearts and memories.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at the Italian Cultural Centre.

Asian Heritage Month

May is Asian Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich history, traditions, and contributions of Asian communities across Canada. From our diverse healthcare team to the community we serve, we are proud to honour the vibrant cultures of Asian Canadians.

This month provides an opportunity to acknowledge the accomplishments of staff, faculty, and learners of Asian descent across the healthcare sector. We must continue to stand united against anti-Asian racism and work towards making our space inclusive, accessible, and welcoming for all.

The Public Sector Network has put together a great Q&A to showcase Asian leaders driving change, encouraging other Asian leaders and supporting their citizens. There is a great interview with Christopher Talusan, a Filipino Chinese Canadian. He talks about his experiences working in the healthcare sector as well as equity, diversity and inclusion. Check out Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future: Aspiring Asian Leaders in the Public Sector, here!

Successful Return of Cancer Education Workshop

On May 9th and 10th, Regional Cancer Care Northwest hosted it’s annual Community Oncology Professional Education Workshop (COPE) for 2024. Returning after a four-year hiatus, this workshop provided an opportunity for over 170 local and regional cancer care providers to share knowledge and expertise and to set the stage for exceptional, evidence informed care.

This year’s theme was ‘Catching Up After COVID’ and featured a variety of local, provincial and national speakers who are experts in cancer care. Sessions highlighted topics including serious illness conversations, concurrent therapy, remote treatment planning, and finding balance between life and work.
