Question 1: True or False: The Body Politic was the name of Canada’s first gay periodical which ran from 1971 – 1987.

Answer: TRUE. The Body Politic was an influential Canadian monthly magazine (often referred to as a newspaper or periodical) that was published in Toronto from November 1971 until February 1987. It celebrated queer history and culture, and was a key voice for the gay liberation and lesbian feminist movements.

Question 2: In which year was same-sex marriage legalized in Canada?

Answer: With the passing of the Civil Marriage Act on July 20, 2005, Canada became the 4th country in the world to legalize same-same marriage, behind Spain (2005), Belgium (2003), and the Netherlands (2001).

Question 3: Which Canadian city was the first in North America to host WorldPride?

Answer: Toronto hosted WorldPride in 2014, becoming the first city in North America to do so. WorldPride was developed by the InterPride organization, to generate visibility and awareness of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community.

Question 4: True or False: Kathleen Wynne was the first openly gay Premier of a Canadian province.

Answer: TRUE. Kathleen Wynne became the 25th Premier of Ontario and the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party on February 11, 2013. Wynne was the province’s first female Premier, and the first Premier in Canada to be openly gay. In 2013, Kathleen Wynne was awarded the LGBT Leadership Award by Egale Canada Human Rights Trust, an award that is given annually to individuals whose exceptional leadership advances human rights for the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community.
