Memo: Staff Parking

Shared on behalf of Ryan Sears, Director, Capital & Facility Services

I want to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude for your patience and understanding as we experience parking pressures due to the start of the CVS construction project. We recognize that this may cause some inconvenience and added travel time.

As a reminder, please feel free to use the overflow lot if needed. We will continue to monitor the situation and do our best to minimize disruptions.

Overflow Lot: Turtle Lot (I) – vehicle access from 1040 Oliver Road and utilize the pedestrian walkway to the hospital at the northeast corner of the lot.

A ‘good catch’ (or near miss) is an event or situation that could have resulted in harm, but did not reach the patient because of chance or timely intervention. Reporting these events can help to identify gaps in order to prevent future adverse events from happening.

On October 11, 2024, as a surgical closure was being performed, the Relief Circulator notified the Surgeon that a part of the removed specimen was missing.  The team worked together to search the cavities laparoscopically and manually, and the surgical draping thoroughly, however it was not found.  It was decided that a second laparoscopic procedure be completed so the room staff and the relief staff assisted with the new sterile set up.  The missing specimen was found within the abdominal cavity and was able to be removed through the laparoscopic port.  This is a great example of conscientious teamwork and a great catch!

Thank you, all for your diligence and dedication to safety!  The group has been awarded a certificate and a gift card to enjoy lunch together.

New winners will be selected every quarter. Continue submitting your near misses for a chance to win! Near miss reports are submitted through the Incident Learning System (patient safety incidents). Click on the ‘safety reporting’ icon from your Novell home page, or go to the iNtranet and choose ‘Safety Reporting’ under ‘Informational’.

March is Engineering Month

March is Engineering Month, a time to celebrate the profession of engineering. Engineers in hospitals work in a variety of roles, including project planning and execution, facility engineering, and biomedical engineering. They design, develop, and maintain equipment and spaces to support clinical care.

2025 is a milestone year for the engineering profession, marking the 100th anniversary of the Calling of an Engineer (where engineering students receive their Iron Rings). A valued symbol for many engineering graduates, the Iron Ring is an ever-present reminder of the commitment engineers make to serve the public with integrity and ethics.

We want to take this opportunity to recognize the dedication, passion, and hard work of engineers here at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. These staff endeavour to improve our patients’ care experience through innovation and progress, and support our vision of exceptional care for every patient, every time.

Kidney Health Month Spotlight: Hemodialysis Satellite Units

March is Kidney Health Month, and we want to raise awareness about kidney disease and its impact on the people of Northwestern Ontario. Throughout the month, we will be featuring members of the Renal Team, and highlight the incredible care they provide for renal patients across our region.

For more information on Renal Services at TBRHSC, and to view educational videos for renal patients and their families, please visit https://tbrhsc.net/programs-services/renal-services/.

Hemodialysis Satellite Units (Sioux Lookout & Fort Frances)

“The satellite units in Sioux Lookout and Fort Frances support patients from Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre’s Renal program who would like to receive treatment and care closer to their home communities – many of these patients coming from the far north.

The Renal team in the Sioux Lookout and Fort Frances units consist of registered nurses who independently perform all aspects of daily dialysis functions. These include set up and take down of the dialysis machines, troubleshooting the reverse osmosis machine, and organizing/scheduling specialty appointments in other cities with corresponding travel. Ongoing medical care is provided on a rotating basis by Thunder Bay Nephrology, with monthly physician visits. In addition, support is also provided mainly via phone by social work (Laurenne), Renal Pharmacy (Matthew), and dietician (Liz).”

“As a Social Worker within Renal care, I am proud to be part of a compassionate, multi-disciplinary team dedicated to supporting both patients and their loved ones through the challenges of chronic illness, including the need for travel or relocation for life-sustaining care. Through our satellite units in Fort Frances and Sioux Lookout, we provide tailored support that meets each patient’s unique needs, offering advocacy, case management, and other vital services to ensure their well-being”.
