Department of the Month – Mental Health Nursing Resource Team

Our Departmental Features are being run monthly, up to our Employee Recognition Week (February 26 to March 3, 2023). This initiative aligns with our Hospital’s strategic priority of Staff Experience, by recognizing and celebrating the work that our staff are doing every day. To see past Departments of the Month, please visit the Employee Recognition Week page of the intranet. This month we are looking at the Mental Health Nursing Resource Team.

The Mental Health Nursing Resource Team (MHNRT) was created as a separate entity from the Medical Nursing Resource Team in order to allow nurses with an interest and experience in mental health nursing to work solely on the Forensic, Adult and Child & Adolescent Mental Health units. In providing care exclusively to mental health patients, the enhanced skills of this specialized team has a positive impact on patient experiences and outcomes, as well as increasing staff satisfaction and performance.

Our team enjoys the work they do in this area as it provides a variety of experience as opposed to being assigned to the same unit. Smaller team means a smaller vacation planner and because the scheduled shifts are often unassigned, there is more flexibility within the schedule as a result.

Some of the services offered by this team includes inpatient and outpatient care. Specific treatment plans are developed to meet individual patient needs, which may include individual or group therapy and involves various clinical programming. The inter-professional team includes members from the following disciplines:

  • Psychiatry
  • Nursing
  • Social Work
  • Psychology
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Leisure Life Skills (Recreational Therapy)
  • Behavioural Therapy
  • Nutrition
  • Spiritual Care

All MHNRT staff attend ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) and maintain current non-violent crisis intervention (NCVI) certification.

The MHNRT takes time to recognize our staff during Nurses’ Week, which takes place in May of each year.

Health Records Donates to Patient Clothing Cupboard

Thank you to the Health Records team for their generous donation of $200 for the Patient Clothing Cupboard.

This donation will help volunteers purchase clothing for patients in situations when the patient or family is unable to provide the necessary clothing upon discharge.

Staff access the Patient Clothing Cupboard everyday for patients, so our need is great. Your generosity is greatly appreciated in helping us serve patients.

Again, thank you so much for your donation to support patients.

CEO’s Blog (December 22, 2022)

Rhonda

Hello, Boozhou, Bonjour,

As we enter the holiday season and close off 2022, please allow me a quick moment to express my sincere thank you for all your continued professionalism, endurance and compassion for the people we serve and to each other.

Whenever I speak to people external to our hospital these days, I remind them that while much of society has returned to some sense of ‘normal’, there is still nothing normal about what you are experiencing. In fact, I educate them on the fact we are currently the busiest and most stressed that we’ve been over the past three years. They are often surprised to learn this.

However, please know that the Senior Leadership Team and I are very much aware of how hard everyone is working, often under short-handed circumstances. What has been impressive has been the continued and incessant collaboration and teamwork evident across departments and units – all with the goal of enhancing the care experience.

Many of you will be working at some point through the holidays. Thank you for that. I truly do hope you are able to carve out some special time to be with your loved ones over the holidays. Your friends, family and neighbours all owe you a debt of gratitude.
If I missed you with our “happy holidays” cart, let me say now that I wish you all the
best of the season.

Moving into 2023, I look forward to connecting with you as we kick off our Staff Advisory Council, where we are aiming to advance our Staff Experience strategic pillar — to create and support an environment that enables us all to work together, grow and thrive.

Happy holidays, and all the best for a better 2023.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have comments on this blog or connect with me for any other matter. You can reach me at: rhonda.ellacott@tbh.net.

Payroll Technical Issue

Shared on behalf of Cindy Fedell, Regional Chief Information Officer for Peter Myllymaa, Vice President, Operations, Clinical & Support Services and Chief Financial Officer

The external vendor who handles our payroll system is experiencing a software issue impacting a number of organizations, including TBRHSC. We have a back up plan to ensure you are paid on the same day, which will involve estimating payroll based on your timesheets. All staff will be paid by the end of the day tomorrow, Thursday, December 22nd.

For those staff with pay being split into multiple bank accounts, Payroll is working to ensure an appropriate estimate is included in those accounts. We recommend you check your account balance and make any transfers if needed.

We recognize this is not an ideal situation given the time of year and would like to sincerely apologize for any stress or inconvenience this may cause. This will be corrected once the payroll system issue is resolved. More information on that timing is forthcoming.

Your paystub (Virtuo ESS) is temporarily unavailable, and we hope to restore access as soon as possible. In the interim, you can monitor your bank account to view your payroll deposit amount. If you find that your pay has been impacted in a way that is not sustainable in the short term and needs to be adjusted sooner, please email TBRHSC.Payroll@tbh.net.
