Canadian Malnutrition Awareness Week (October 4-8)

Did you know?

1 in 4 patients who are admitted to hospital are malnourished.

Malnourished patients stay 2-3 days longer in hospital than nourished patients and are a higher risk of hospital readmission within 30 days.

How can we reduce the incidence of malnutrition at TBRHSC?

Screen patients on admission!

The Canadian Malnutrition Task Force has developed the Canadian Nutrition Screening Tool (CNST). It is 2 simple questions, which have been built into our PCS Nursing Medical/Surgical Admission Intervention in the EMR:

  • Have you lost weight in the past 6 months WITHOUT TRYING to lose this weight?
  • Have you been eating less than usual FOR MORE THAN A WEEK?

If both answers are “YES”, then it indicates that your patient has a nutrition risk and triggers a Registered Dietitian to assess and implement appropriate nutrition interventions.

Join the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force from October 4-8, 2021, for Canadian Malnutrition Awareness Week 2021™. The CMAW 2021 webinar line-up brings together experienced nutrition experts, who will share knowledge related to implementing changes in nutrition care and practical evidence-based tools that can be used in clinical settings, even in the face of COVID-19.
