Cyber Security Awareness Month: Cyber Hygiene

Cyber hygiene set of practices to maintain the health and security of users, devices, networks and data.  The goal is to keep data secure and protect it from theft or attacks.

Habits to Adopt:

  1. Disable your camera and locations services.
  2. Clear your browser cache and delete cookies.
  3. Lock your computer when you step away.
  4. Participate in safe browsing- pay attention of the URL.  URL beginning with “https” and a lock icon indicates that the communication to the site is encrypted and secure.
  5. Ensure all privacy and security settings are reviewed – IT does this for you when you use a work computer.
  6. Be cautious about people: be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls, text or email messages.  Do not provide personal information until you are certain they are authorized to have the information.
  7. Think before you click: only interact with emails or websites that you know are safe. Phone the sender if you have doubts.

MFA- Multi-Factor Authentication

MFA a security technology which requires multiple methods of authentication; not just a password.  It adds an extra layer of security to your accounts and devices.

Cyber criminals can use various methods to guess, steal and compromise your passwords.  MFA makes it more difficult for cyber criminals to get access to your devices and accounts.

Who you are — facial recognition, voice verification

What you know — security questions, passwords, PINS

What you own — phone or a fob
